Couple of years ago I bought into Daniel’s marketing about their new Festival Tower project and how it is going to be an exclusive building a new home of TIFF. I bought a condo in the building that is supposed to open very soon.

Yesterday, I was at Daniel’s presentation where they “unveiled for the firs time” – actually there were plenty of article online about it new “Cinema Tower” built right near Festival Tower. They didn’t start the sales yet, but construction already begun.

Why I think this is a bullshit move:

You sold me on exclusivity, what is happening with it – when now you have another cinema tower right by it?

The prices of Cinema Tower – are pretty much the same as pre sale prices for Festival Tower. Really, after 3 years you start selling it for a low price again? Wow thank you that really helps all the investors!

You knew you have a space for two towers, how come we as buyers were not aware of it? Half of the building was supposed to be on Adelaide street, now apparently it will look over another building

Look at Cinema Tower visualization, there is no Festival Tower in a picture? Deceiving your new customers?

I understand that Daniel’s is for profit corporation that needs to make money, but their disregard to customers – is so typical for Canadian oligopolies. They scam you with their visualizations and then drop value for a home you been waiting for 3 years.

I bet they started construction, because they don’t want class lawsuit by the owners of Festival Tower to prevent them from building it. What can I say: Daniel’s that is a bullshit move!

I watched Google’s presentation live today about Buzz. I think it is amazing product especially the mobile components and ability to integrate with other tools. Yet it inspired this post about me being scared of Internet. I should be grateful for internet not only it makes my life interesting, but it allows me to make a living without having to wear a suit everyday and while doing what I love. At the same time sometimes internet pisses me off and even scares me sometimes.

So why do I get frustrated and scared sometimes?

No matter where you are geographically it is hard to disappear

Sometimes I need time for myself and change of scenery. Back in a day a person could go to another province and start a new life. However, these days, with tools like Skype, SMS, Facebook, Email – I feel like I never left. Which means even if I am located overseas I still get to see for example pictures of my ex with some guy. Long lost relatives that I don’t want to talk can call me on Skype whenever they want, unless I block them. Old classmates can write and ask some money to borrow.

Everything you do online is recorded, so you are accountable

Anything you do online is recorded somewhere and you have to keep thinking what if? What if my ISP gets hacked and all my visited pages become public? What if I drink too much beer and post something bad on Twitter (my Mom follows me). When digital face recognition becomes a norm it will be easy to recognize me, as I tagged more than 300 photos of me on Facebook. What if all student party pictures get posted online and anyone who Google’s my name will be able to see them?

Stalker’s Paradise

I like playing FourSquare and use other applications that need my GPS location. I have a feeling that Google Buzz mobile will be more popular than anything else before. I am always pretty careful in terms of where I check–in and try not to reveal too much information. I try not only not to reveal where I am all the times, but also not to reveal the patterns. However, a lot of people don’t think about it. I mean I have couple of people as my FourSquare friends that I never saw in my life.

If someone will add my blog, somehow will slip into my Facebook account and follows me on Twitter they will know a hell a lot about my life. Something like that back in a day could have never been possible. The only thing here that adds me some confidence are my aikido and muya thai classes.

Addiction/Dependence

I consider internet to be an addiction, when it is gone I am going crazy and have withdrawal symptoms. However, after couple of days I sober up and understand that the life without online exists. I am also so dependent on internet and its tools. I honestly don’t know how I would manage a team without basecamp or other project management system. I can’t live without calendar sync with my Iphone and my tricked out GMail. I am so dependent on these tools that if I had to give them up, I think I would go out of business.

Said all of that I totally understand that I shouldn’t blame or be scared of Internet. At the end of the day everything is my own choice. I choose what to do online, how to conduct myself and what to share. It is up to me to use a different phone or leave one at home when I go out drinking. I can delete my Facebook profile if I wanted, maybe should just do it – oh well, no I can’t just not right now

So here are my thoughts. I think the most valuable part of this post is that we make the choice, so we need to be responsible.

My experience of reserving a car with Discount Car Rental and being told there are no cars two hours before the start of my 4 day road trip

I am not going to go into a long explanation about my awfull experience with Discount Car and Truck Rental. You can see the video, here is what happened:

-I booked a pick -up truck (because we have bicycles) and had a confirmed reservation for our four day trip

-two hours before the start of the trip I get a phone call saying that there no pick up truck as the one was in accident and that they appologize for the inconvenience, but they don’t have any other cars

-they told me I can call main line of customer service

-I left 4 voicemails to customer service and sent a letter, and I didn’t even receive an apology

My thoughts: that is some awfull customer service.I mean the left me on Thursday running around trying to rent a pick-up truck from other companies, of course they were almost none left and the prices I paid for one was way bigger than expected. I was just lucky I could get one. i understand that accidents happen, but they happen in every industry and for that you have a buffer. (Exta cars) if you don’t have anything, you go to your competition (like airline companies do ) and make the trip possible. IF you can’t do anything you still should do something to make it up to your customer: free rental, apologies, vice president calling you – something!

Not only these guys screwed up, but they also didn’t leave any ways of communicating with them and just showed they don’t really care about me. Well if you don’t care me I can less about you Discount Car Rental. I just hope other people don’t get into the same trap.

What can I say to the carriers? boo hoo your APRU was so high historically that you have a lot of place on where to fall. I mean only in Canada we get charged: system access fee, we pay separately for voicemail, caller ID and received SMS messages from online. Even just writting about it makes me mad for the amount of money I pay to Rogers every month and how they still treat me like a second class citizen, because they couldn’t care less.

I guess the honemoon period is soon will be over: you can’t be ripping off Canadian customers forever!

Like a lot of people in Toronto I get bombarded by flyers from Extreme Fitness that usually say: $8 per month, no contract, no execuses etc… I think I receive at least 2 flyers per month from them. My buddy and I decided to finally check it out, plus we heard they have an MMA program as well. The assumption was to check out the gym see the real costs and what kind of teachers they have for MMA. The conclusion was that it costs way more, they push the sale worse than a used car salesman and their MMA intstructors have more attitude than young Mike Tyson.

The experience started from us filling out some crazy amount of paperwork. After around 10 min a nice guy ( he was actually nice) said that he will show us the gym. He asked us both another 20 or 30 questions about our fitness goals etc… I tried to tell him that we are pretty experienced people and just want to see the gym, get the costs and the schedule for classes. It didn’t matter as he continued the same line of questioning, later I understood that was in order to sell their private lessons. I asked couple of times how much MMA classes costs and he said he doesn’t know “they need to asses my fitness level.” I asked a pretty reasonable question how is the price related to my fitness level? He said don’t worry lets just talk to one of our 2 MMA trainers they both fought in Pride.

So we went to check out the gym which was not bad at all in itself. Then we finally reached George K (couldn’t find his last name anywhere) who is supposed to be the ex Pride fighter. He was leaning back on his chair when he saw us, didn’t even stand-up to shake our hand. Once I explained that I take Muya Thai and Aikido and was just wondering how much MMA would cost here he said “We did you ever see free MMA in this city?.” I said no and I don’t expect it to be free, but I want to know how much does it cost – he still didn’t respond and just wanted to sign us up for a free demo. I can’t explain his attitude in writting, but he acted like he is some undefeated champion of the world and I am kid who wants to get an interview. If I might say quite an asshole attitude.

I finally asked the guy about the prices for the gym itself they are : $66 if you want to use one gym and $74 if you want to use multiple gyms. This price is valid only with long term contract, go figure after all their flyers saying that their is no contract. He still didn’t tell me the price for MMA. Once we were about to leave the manager came and tried to push their sale on us again. He even tried to close the doors till we buy the membership. After we finally left the place I decided to never go back to Extreme Fitness again! Last thing I need in my life are pushy sales and crappy attitude.

When I went home I checked out a bio of the second MMA trainer George Kiriakou their had over there and turns out he is not that nice of a guy either. Check out the video and comments bellow. BTW I didn’t find any single mention of him or his buddy being in Pride. Also as somewhat experience martial artist I can tell you that there is no way two teachers can give you an adequate training in Muya Thai, BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing and Conditioning.

So overall I figured out that Extreme Fitness spends a lot of money on marketing to you, pushing their sales onto to you and then sign you in a long contract. I doubt really that after that they have a good customer service. This is a no for me.

As many of you know my cell phone service provider is Rogers Wireless. The reason I chose Rogers is not because they are the best, or have any sort of acceptable customer service – the reason is that they are the ONLY GSM company in Canada. I travel a lot overseas and need to be able to use the same phone with different sim cards – that’s why I need GSM phone.

Today I learned that they increased a time between upgrading your phone from 12 to 24 months only for smartphone. My questions is Why???

As a blackberry bold user (that I bought on craigslist, since Rogers didn’t let me upgrade even though my monthly bills are around $400) I spend more money with you than your average voice only customer. Furthermore, I am a business user so I will have roaming charges, long distance charges and higher voice usage. Overall I would consider myself a pretty good customer in terms of revenue.

My question is then why shouldn’t you take care of me even more than you do of a low paying customer? Have you ever heard of parreto principle? I want to see my cellphone company as my business partner, you don’t look like one right now! It looks like that because you know I can pay more – you charge me way more not giving anything in return.

Shame, shame, shame.

We say in Russia the world is round and we will meet in the corner. I hope that one day your monopoly is over – and you will suffer or even go bankrupt from years of abusing your customers.

My little brother is finally here, so between playing a parent and celebrating Canada Day (I celebrate anything that gives me a good reason to part) I’ve been a bit busy. I was very keen on writing a post yesterday, but guess what? My Rogers Wireless was down and they couldn’t even fix it, because their own systems were down. This can be pretty disastrous if you work from home and using internet for pretty much everything you do.

Instead of describing my phone calls with Rogers (which were lessons on how not do customer service) I just want to put my two cents in for this whole Iphone in Canada story. As many of you know Rogers reveiled their Iphone pricing couple of days ago and a consumer backlash was phenomenal. I wanted say that I am proud for Canadian consumers who created a website ruinediphone.com and right now already more than 30,000 people signed the petition. Btw I encourage everyone who didn’t do it to sign it right now.

While I don’t think the petition will change anything since Rogers/Fido is an only GSM carrier in Canada and only they have exclusive rights to sell Iphone (which is a total anti-capitalistic approach). They are just milking this thing for whatever they can. I am still proud of Canadia consumers who are so aware that they are being ripped of. When I moved to Canada two years ago from Chicago – I found the prices for cellur service shocking. I was so ticked with the fact that despite the high prices everyone was used to these plans.

It is not a secret that Canadian don’t like to be compared to Americans (we have free medical insurance over here), but I still think that comparing value packages especially now when Canadian dollar is in par with American way is essential in getting what we rightfully deserve. We already pay more taxes when get our salaries and buy goods, why the price is so much more? I still can’t wrap my hear around it.

-why cars made in Canada and exported to USA are cheaper to buy in US bring back here than just buy a car in Canada?
-why books still cost 30% more in Canadian dollars?
-why electronics that are brought from Asia and distributed through Best Buy cost 20%-30% more over here

Just needed to unwind that is what blogs are for.

Check out theIlube picture!

I read TechCrunch all the time on monday they posted about a new startup Movies Networks Incrporated. The service provides High Definition movies via internet to users. The post discusses thechical differences from it’s major competitors Brightcove and Maven. I think the general feel of the post and the comments is that High definition on demand is the way of the future.

I totally agree, however here is my problem: what are we going to do in Toronto with hight defenition videos when both Rogers Wireless and Bell put caps of 60gb for internet traffic. I mean 60 gb should be enough for 15 movies – assuming you don’t do anything else online that month online. The same goes for everything else : online applications like Google Docs or online back up services eat your traffic. Really, looks like everything is moving these days online and what do we do here in Toronto? We limit the internet usage.

Is it just me or are we going backwards? Leave a comment if you agree that 60 gb for a new era of internet is just NOT enough.

I don’t have a lot visitors over here – it is a new blog and I my writting is not for everyone. Still, I was analyzing my traffic with google analytics and figured that 45.45% of the traffic that came from Google’s organic search. Guess what was the keyword: “rogers wireless overcharging” and my post would should up in the first page of the search. Apparently, it is a hot topic right now.

I decided to do a little investigation a did the search myself:

“rogers wireless overcharging” -6630 pages, mostly from blogs. I also found that there is a website over there with a simple name “I hate Rogers Wirelss” that sells T-Shirts and you can get an email with the ending of that domain.

Sounds like I am not alone in my thoughts:) One might think, so what Rogers probably doesn’t know about all those negative comments – but he or she would be wrong.

I continued to analyze my traffic and checked out my feed subscribers and one of the subscribers was a mysterious bot: www.radian6.com/crawler. I went to their page and quickly learned that Radian6 provides big corporations a service of monitoring blogs and forums to see what people are saying about their brand. I cross checked the subscribtion and my post about Rogers and figured that they are actually monitoring what am I saying about the company.

Check out couple of posts about Radian6:

An Abusive crawler from Canada

Radian6 Monitors You

Now I know Rogers is reading what I am saying or at least the aggregate version of our cumulative posts. I don’t know what I am more appaled by, by the fact that I am being watched or that nobody still didn’t appologize for my experience with the company. I know I spend around $2500 per year with the company and as thanks I just get bunch printed flyers in my mailbox with an attempt to sell me more services. Own up to your campaigns about customer service, make me not dread calling your line or better don’t create any reasons to call you rather than to just say thanks.

Make me wanna tell my friends that I love Rogers Wirelss and I will pay even more for your services.

I didn’t find any blogs with words in them “I love Rogers Wireless.”

Think about it!
